PROJECT ONE - Color Theory
The Basics
The students were given instructions on how to create a parabola - basically, the creation of a curve using multiples of straight lines, (this is a simplified definition however, there are many other descriptions and purposes for a parabola, but for our purposes in sixth grade visual art - the aforementioned definition will due). Because the various lines of color overlap, color mixing occurs. What is displayed is to whet your appetite... More is to come in the weeks to follow :-)
The slideshow below shows everyone's hard work. Ask your child what they learned about math and color.
PROJECT TWO
BASIC PERSPECTIVE
Project two was a simple lesson on the very basics of perspective - understanding the concepts of foreground, middleground and background. Students enjoyed creating compositions bases upon the theme of "going to school". They were encouraged to think outside the box and create even their ideal walk, or swim to school. Some students were battling dragons and space aliens. With their visual compositions laid side-to-side, a continuous landscape was created. This is a "myriorama". Their stories made for great compositions as well. Enjoy!
The myriorama is best viewed as one long running group, so here is a little video, however, poorly taped of the "landscape". :-)
PROJECT THREE
Perspective and Color Compositions
For the final project students were required to combine lessons learned from the first and second project to create a composition that utilized a good sense of color and basic perspective. Students placed "pop-ups" to accentuate the foreground, middle ground and background. The STORIES about these gems are below the power point.
I drew a correlation for the students between an artistic composition and written composition in that both tell stories. Here are just a sampling of great stories that the students wrote that offer the back story for their artistic expression. Enjoy!
The Frame By Ben
I found myself in a strange landscape. It felt… squeezed, somehow. It’s hard to explain. I was right next to 2 long roads, like highways, across a flat, grass plain. There were no cars. Over to my far right there was a small brown house and an unoccupied driveway. I walked over to it. I tried the door and my hand passed through. I was startled at first. I couldn’t feel anything on the inside. I peeked my head through. Infinite blackness. I pulled out. In the distance I could see a… hm. I’m not sure what it was. It looked like a saucer shooting down a beam of yellow light and abducting a citizen by sucking him up through it’s hull. I ran over and tried to grab the citizen. I was not affected by the beam and my hand passed right through the guy’s leg. He stopped moving. The ufo stopped spinning. The armed defense vehicle that was rolling to the rescue stopped moving. The bullets froze in midair. This was very strange. On my far left there was a dirt race track with dirt bikes racing around. I examined it. There was a finish line and a person with a flag standing by it, waving the flag. I stepped onto the track and let the bikes come towards me. It passed through and the whole scene stopped, flag waver included. Even the dust coming off of the back wheel froze. This was extremely paranormal. I went from place to place, trying to touch anything I could. Everything froze. I wanted to get away. Get help somehow. I ran as fast as I could. It looked liked everything was getting closer. I suddenly slammed into something. I couldn't see anything. There was an invisible wall! I turned around. Everything looked blurry. Like a watercolor painting. My body looked like pencil lines. I raised my left eyebrow as high as I could as the artist put the finishing touches on the frame of the picture I was trapped in.

My African Sunset By Olivia
A painting inspired by three years of living in South Africa. If you were to walk or drive down the streets of Cape Town, you would see paintings in a similar style as mine being sold by artists from all over Africa. This artwork is not an original, it is nothing more than a continuation, inspired by a multi media collage I saw in a Sunday market, this painting tells a story of a far off African tribe.
On one hot summer evening, a small tribe known as Jarita (which means an earthen water jug), was preparing for a party. This is an annual celebration of the setting sun. This is no ordinary sunset this is the type of sunset that only comes every 17 years. Every 17 years the sun appears to come to it’s fullest size, this happens because the spirits of the over-world reach out to earth and give new life to those who need it. The Jarita tribe lay right on the equator, so they are always struggling with the harsh heat, which is why the over-world spirits reach out to the Jarita every 17 years. Once the spirits gave them a whole evening of cool air, another they gave them a fresh rainfall or one year they were struggling with crops because the weather was so dry, the spirits gave them damp mud to help grow their crops. This year Jarita is expecting a very big gift because, legends say that every hundredth gift from the over-spirits… will be a very special gift, they call them the Blessings. According the Chief’s calculations this is going to be Jarita’s 2nd Blessing.
Everyone is so excited for this Blessing, of course everyone is very lucky to be here for a Blessing because, the next one will only come in 1,700 years, so surely no one will be alive then. The whole tribe has been preparing for this evening for months. The farmers have been working extra hard on getting the crops ready for the feast, oh but the cooks have been working even harder! No one has eaten for the last 2 days so they can save their appetite for the big feast.
As the sun starts to slowly make it’s way down to the bottom of the earth, everyone goes into their homes to rest. They need to save their energy for the big night. Just like always, before the gift takes place in it’s new home the spirits warn the people that it is time. The wind starts to blow and then they hear a loud BOOM! Everyone rushes out of their homes to see the Blessing form. First the sun glowed a very bright, orange, red and radiant light. Then a laser of light shined along a big open area not too far from Chief's hut, a moment later the sun went back to it’s original state, leaving behind a flowing river.

As I walked out onto second floor motel in a suburb, I saw this view. I saw two flower pots in the foreground, one flourishing, the other someone forgot to water. On a hill, in the middle ground, there are two soccer balls that were left out. In the background the moon is starting to be visible as the sun sets. In the distance, a city is in shadow on the left of the sun and to the right, a range of mountains. The sun is reflected off the clouds turning them pink. The sky around the sun is still light, while the sky further out is darker. The grass isn’t perfectly even from kids playing on it, some parts greener than others. During the day I had climbed wolf peak, the tallest of the three mountains. It was nice to get back home to eat a big dinner: roasted broccoli, mashed potatoes and guacamole. I was so hungry after that long hike. It was nice to sit and relax, watching the sunset. At the peak, looking down, we saw a group of goats, grazing. They looked as if they didn’t have a care in the world other than eating grass. In just a week there would be a full moon, I was looking forward to that night because that night I got to see all my cousins. Every year we our family gets together and while the parents talk, the kids play. We play frisbee, soccer, tag, and almost any other game we can come up with. When it gets too dark to play, we go inside, and play card games until we have to go to bed. The next day, we leave to go back home. I really wanted to stay for a week longer or even a few more days. Though, in a way I was happy to go home, where my nice, cozy bed was, I also hadn’t seen my friends for a week and a half. I guess there was good where I was, and where I was coming back to. I then realized that I was putting an awful lot of thought into the fact I was going home. My mom called for me. I had to go to sleep. I walked up the stairs, put my pajamas on, and crawled into my bed. I thought, a week from now, I’d be at home, in my own bed, dreaming of where I am now.
The Niagara Falls By Annie
It is a beautiful afternoon in Niagara. A family went on a vacation there and they decided to buy tickets for the activity “Cave of The Winds”, where you all wear yellow raincoats and walk on platforms that are really close to the waterfalls. The highest platform has a spot directly beneath the Falls called the Hurricane Platform.
On the railings behind Lisa and her brother, Michael, a yellow bird was standing on the railing, holding its left wing up to avoid droplets of water from the lively, turquoise water of the Niagara Falls from splashing all over its head, glancing curiously at Lisa and Michael. Its baby was standing in front, looking partly at the camera and partly at the brother and sister.
On a higher platform, a three-year-old boy stood beside his mother with the oversized raincoat draping all the way to the platform. While she is taking a picture of the Falls with the rainbow floating by (they are common in the Niagara Falls, when sunlight and the water combine in a pretty special way), water splashed into his eyes and he cried and reached out to tugged at his mother’s raincoat.
On the platform above the Falls, a tiny little mouse was being chased by a brown and lively puppy. It was trapped by the edge of the platform with nowhere to go except for slipping through the dog owner's legs and skittering away, which is what it tried to do, but nearly fell off the platform. (Nearly, even if in the painting it looks like it really did fall off.)

The Perfect View By Linnea
I was so excited! Finally the day had came! My family and I were going to our annual trip to our beach house in Florida! School was over and we were packing up all our things in the red family van. Even my 15 year old big sister Lynn was helping out.
“Ok, I think that’s it!” My dad called as he locked up the house. My mom, Lynn, and I were already in the car and Lynn couldn’t stop talking about all the waves she would surf. “I remember last year, there were some of the biggest waves of the year!” I just rolled my eyes and put on my headphones. The whole ride was music in my ears. At one point I must have fell asleep because the next thing I knew was Mom shaking me awake. I slowly and tiredly stepped out of the van and opened my eyes. The beach house that I had been to so many times was now in front of me. I saw Lynn run straight down to the beach and I decided to follow her. The moment my feet touched that soft sand I felt like I was finally at home.
We decided to head to the beach that same night, mainly because Lynn could not wait any longer to go surfing. We packed everything we needed in a big blue bag and all headed down. Lynn of course brought her purple and blue surfboard with her and walked straight for the waves. My parents had already reserved a sail boat for us two weeks ago and it was waiting for us down by the dock. It was a very big boat with a lot of room in it.
“Come on Annie, let’s go for a ride while your sister goes surfing!” My mom called to me, stepping into the boat.
“No thanks, I think I’m just going to stay back here!” I called back sitting down on a pile of rocks that were placed right next to the shore of the water.
“You sure you don’t want to come, honey?” Mom said as my father climbed on board. “Yeah you should come sweetheart! There will be some beautiful views!”
“Na, I’m fine, you guys can go on without me!” I called to them both. So there I sat, looking out on to the large ocean. I looked over at Lynn who looked like she was about to fall but always caught herself. I always wished to be as talented as her, it seemed as if she could do anything!
And then I look over at the brown boat with the big white sail carrying my parents. They looked so happy and relaxed, talking and laughing. Right at that moment seemed like everything was perfect. The sky was beautiful, the water was beautiful, and our family, our family was the most beautiful sight I had ever seen.

The Orange Butterfly By Dylan
One late afternoon I was just waking up, because I had been very tired the previous night. As I walked down the stairs, I turned into the kitchen, and I realized I had left the door open the previous night. When I closed the door I noticed a large orange butterfly had gotten inside. I was to sleepy to even realize the danger to the butterfly in the house. The danger was my dog, Stella, who loved to attack bugs. I limped over to the couch, and started reading my book. My family must have gone shopping, so I was home alone for the time being. As I was beginning to get cold, my other dog, Dakota laid down her head on me and I was warm again. Soon I heard a bark coming from the kitchen. That made me realize I was uncomfortable. I got up, and shuffled over to the kitchen. What I saw next while yawning was my 3rd dog, Riley sitting on the kitchen floor. As I opened my eyes, everything in the kitchen seemed fine, but I didn’t understand where the noise had been coming from. As I was walking back to continue reading, I heard the crashing noise again, and then a growl. This would be a problem. I could tell. I limped back into the kitchen, and saw Stella jumping. At first I thought this meant a dog fight, which could result in the death of one, or both of the dogs. I found out that what was happening was a lot more peaceful, yet not peaceful at all. My dog Stella was going after the butterfly I had seen earlier. I was relieved, but they were still making a mess. I shooed the butterfly outside, for it’s own good, and slammed the door shut. I was panting, and then the doorbell rang. My parents were home. As I opened the door, I let out a small “Uh-oh”.

The Camping Trip By Solomon
It was a nice sunny day, me and my dad were going camping. The place we were going was a 3 hour drive from our house. We got up at 6:30 ate breakfast, and went on our way. We were on the road at 7:10. We drove in the black jeep grand Cherokee and had rented 2 canoes for us to use. It was a day as clear as possible, no clouds for miles. After about 2 hours we took a stop at a gas station for gas. An hour later we were there. It was beautiful, not a cloud to be seen and the sun was shining. In the background there were hills and birds and we slowed down. Soon enough we parked. We hopped out of the car, right next to us there was a river that stretched all the way to the hills. I was excited “We are here! Who hoo, and there is a river we can use to canoe!” “Alright let’s get the canoe down and have some fun” I said. After a little trouble we got one canoe down and hopped in. “Here we go” I said as we started moving. Me and my dad were both excited and we were having fun as we rode around for a little while. Then I got tired of rowing and my dad offered we switch. I stood up to go to his side and sploosh. We descended into the water. Once me and my dad got back into the canoe we started laughing. We were both soaked but we didn’t care, I forgot the number one rule of a canoe... don’t stand up! Soon enough we rode back to our jeep in the canoes. We kept going as the sun set and got to our jeep at dawn. Now it was time to set up camp we took our tent out of the trunk and started to set it up. We unfolded it and got all our supplies, there were the things we put in the ground to hold it; we set those aside and found a good spot to put it, then brought all the supplies there. “We have done this before so it shouldn’t be hard”, I said, My dad agreed. First he stretched out the tent and I put the first and second holders in then we switched because it is hard for me to do the third and fourth holders. Soon enough we were done. “Yay” I exclaimed. “We have to get the sleeping bags and our other supplies” said my dad. Twenty minutes later we were in the tent, “what a fun day “ I said. And before you know it we were asleep.

Three Little Ducks by Kate
Once upon a time, there were 3 ducks. Their names were FiFi, LuLu and NafNaf. They lived in a forest with other ducks. Even though they didn’t notice it, their forest was slowly being cut down. Sure, they could see when some of the deer that would graze in the pasture weren’t present, but they all just thought that they had just moved to a new place. Finally, FiFi, the smartest of the group, realized something was wrong when she saw that her usual corner that she rested in, was missing. She called her friends over to investigate. If you didn’t know, FiFi loved mysteries. She and her little duck friends, decided to make a plan. She didn’t even know who was causing all this trouble, but she knew that she wanted to fix it, for the sake of her fellow ducklings. She needed a team, not just any team, but 2 other ducks that were as dedicated to her mission as she was. “ SQUAKKKKKK “ she said, which translated to “ I need two volunteers! “ she said loudly. All the ducks just stared blankly at her. Then, the littlest one of the bunch spoke up, with a voice just barely a whisper. “ I’ll help!” he said. She had to fight a smile, he was just so tiny, how would he ever complete anything, let alone a mission to save the whole duck colony. She slowly willed herself to speak, “ What is your name? “ “N- Naf Naf “. She looked over him. “Fine.” She knew that no one else would volunteer, so he was her only hope. He slowly waddled to the front of the crowd. Ducks making way for him. FiFi knew she needed 1 more volunteer. She called out again. “Please, just one more duck, just one small duckling who is ready, not just to save your fellow ducks, but our HOME!!” She waited for one more duck. Just one more, that was all she needed. “I’ll do it!” She turned around to face a normal sized duck. She was strong, but not too much. “What’s your name?” “LuLu, and I intend to save our home!” “Alright.” FiFi said, awaiting her new adventure. She puffed out her chest and started to walk. And so the adventure began.

Annabeth’s Story By Lauren
After so many days running, when she saw the camp Annabeth was… relieved. It, was the most beautiful sight. The architecture was amazing filled with Ancient Greek design. But she still couldn’t shake off the grief that hung in the air, Annabeth’s eyes filled with tears just thinking about what happened. Thalia she was amazing in almost every way, she tried to hold off the monsters with her shield Agges so she, Luke, and Grover could make it past the border, then the Cyclops… she started to sob, “ hey, hey it’s ok” Luke said his blue eyes filled with tears as he tried to comfort her, she stared up at him, “no it’s not Luke; Thalia is dead!” She yelled she couldn’t help it, she was only 7. “ It’s all my fault, all my fault they're never going to have another chance, she was a child of Zeus, ZEUS! “ Grover started to mumble while chewing his shirt, Annabeth heard hoofs, she looked up and saw a creature with a white lower body of a horse and the upper body of a man, “hello, I am Chiron-” Luke cut him short, “yeah I know who you are Chiron, you and Hermes let my mother become, like how she is NOW!” He said furiously to Chiron and ran off towards the dining pavilion. “Hmm, Annabeth how about we go to the big house” Chiron said while pointing to a what looked a little bit like a barn, “you too Grover, come on” he added and lifted Annabeth up and put her on his back.
5 Years Later…
“Chiron, who is that?” Annabeth asks him as he trots by with a boy with black messy hair, and has a horn in his lap, he seemed to be knocked out. “ Not now child, the boy needs help” Chiron told her as she followed him into the big house. ‘This boy might be that camper, I might finally go out on a quest! Or what if he stole whatever it is that Chiron is so worried about’ she started to think . Being a child of Athena thinking was one of her many talents. Chiron put the boy on one of the beds in the camp’s hospital “ Annabeth, I need to attend to the archery class will you watch him?” he asked her but it was seemed a little more like an order than a question “I-” she started but when she thought about it this would be a good way to possibly get answers; “Yes I will watch him” Annabeth told Chiron. When Chiron went out of the big house Annabeth started to feed the boy ambrosia, a food that is for the gods any mortal will literally burn up if they had some but demigods or half-bloods could have it as long as they did not have to much then they would also burn up. The boy’s eyes opened a little and she suddenly felt hope flutter inside her. “What is it that the gods are so angry about? Do you know?”, she whispered to him excitedly “wha-...” he croaked then closed his eyes again “almost!” she said furiously. When Chiron came back he let Annabeth go back to her daily activities, she went to the sword fighting arena and decided to practice for a little while until Chiron wanted her. She ran back to the big house right away, the boy was up and out side of the big house with Chiron “ Annabeth this is Percy I would like it if you could show him around” said Chiron. Annabeth didn't know that that day would lead to 2 of the biggest prophecies in the demigod world.

Flying High By Eoin
I am looking down from above, in a plane. As, I travel by I see tiny homes. The ground seems so very far away. The sun is going down, and the night is on its way. I am restless, and I have a long flight from my home to my destination. The place I am going is where the Queen lives. I have never met her. I look down at the landscape below. It looks beautiful as the last of the sunlight reflects off the tall buildings. I travel with my older sister. I ask her for candy. She tells me no. The flight attendants watch us. Sometimes, they are fun. Sometimes, they are not. Occasionally, an adult sits near us and talks to us. They ask us for our names and if we are ok. I can’t sleep on the plane. I watch boring movies, over and over. I like to play on my I pad. It helps to pass the time away. I wish the planes had internet access. I would go online and play games with friends. I cringe when the flight attendants offer us the airline food. It’s horrible. It’s not real food. My sister says that I must eat it, but I won’t. I hope there is no turbulence. It makes my stomach ill. It makes me feel like I am on a roller coaster. When we land, it makes my ears pop. It hurts. When we land, I’m happy that the flight is over. We exit the plane, and we have to wait for my dad to greet us. He pops his head out of the crowd. He is excited to see us. It been a long time since the last time I’ve seen him. It’s been a long flight, and it’s finally over. That is until we fly back home, and we do it all over again.
