Intermediate
Seventh graders have skills suitable for a level of knowledge between basic and advanced. They have transitioned from the basics applications of visual art and are ready to move forward with more challenging tasks.
Project One: Sculpture - Transform SPACE by creating installations, (an artistic genre of 3D works that are often site-specific and designed to transform the perception of a space); that work within a specific set of perimeters. Using a set amount of materials and working as a team – doing what the team agrees students must create a sculpture and explain the rationale behind the usage of space in terms of perspective.
Students must collaborate as they think critically and problem solve as they seek to find a unifying theme to create an installation sculpture using very specific materials.
Students will view works by Ai Wei Wei and Martin Puryear
Project Two: Perspective - Creating 3D Isometric Mazes - Students will take sculpture skills and produce 3D mazes; once again using problem solving and critical thinking skills. If possible we may work with our math department to collaborate and expand on learning opportunities. We will study the works of Escher and tessellation artists
Project Three:Perspective - 2D Isometric Mazes - While students will design their 3D mazes before actually constructing them, to translate those designs into a 2D composition is another challenge as they will concentrate on one aspect of the design adding elements that would not translate into a 3D design.
